Abstract

In order to confirm and to break the double dormancy of Cornus controversa and C. florida seeds, scarification by sulfuric acid and low temperature treatment were applied. Three of four hours of scarification by sulfuric acid was the most effective for germination and at least 90 days of prechilling treatment was required in C. controversa seeds. One hour sulfuric acid treatment favoured C. florida seeds scarification, and their pre-chilling requirement must exceeded 90 days at least. So it could be concluded that the seeds of 2 Cornus species applied in this experiment showed double dormancy, and both optimum chilling period anil scarification tune will be required to increase the germination.
